What plant is that?
Photos: Missouri Plants
Our July Mystery Plant is a hemi-parasite that takes nutrition from the roots of oak trees growing in dry woods and clearings. Each plant can grow 2-6 feet high with opposite entire leaves and clear yellow funnel-shaped flowers, 5-lobed at the tip, blooming in leafy racemes. The stem is smooth. The lower leaves may be deeply lobed. Note that the name used in Newcomb’s has been superseded by a new name – so check your guess on GoBotany – though the old name will also be accepted.
