The mystery plant for February 2021 is rare in RI. It is a herbaceous perennial with nodding spikes of white flowers. The flowers have white stamens and grow from 8-12 inches long. The flowers have no petals or sepals. The leaves are heart shaped and they are attached to the main stem by sheaths. The flowers bloom from mid-July to early September. The plant grows 2-4 feet high in swamps and streams from RI to Michigan south.
