This month’s plant is a late summer bloomer. It has large heart-shaped basal leaves which are toothed along the margins. The stem is rather long and trails along the ground as it becomes top heavy with flowers. The stem can grow 3-4 feet long and the leaves become reduced in size and are no longer heart-shaped as the stem lengthens. The flowers have 10 to 20 rays which are tinged with violet or purple and are sometimes white. This plant grows in woods, edges of shaded trails and blooms from August to September.
