January’s mystery plant is colorful enough to brighten any winter’s day. This member of the Aster family has 5-petalled tubular flowers of bright purplish-pink in thistle-like terminal clusters of thirty to fifty flowers. The rather coarse-looking plant has alternate leaves and ranges from 3 to 8 feet in height. Its lanceolate leaves are 3 to 10 inches long and are finely toothed. It grows in moist meadows, fields and along the edges of ponds and streams.
