The mystery plant for May is a perennial with red juice and a single basal leaf with from 3 to 9 deep lobes. The single flower which is usually white has 2 sepals and from 7 to 16 petals. The fruit is a spindle-shaped capsule topped with a persistent style. This plant blooms from mid-April to late May. It grows in rich woods.
