The mystery plant for May is listed in Rare Plants of RI as State Threatened. The shiny green leaves which are all basal, have scalloped margins and are about 1- 1 1/2" wide at flowering time enlarging to 3” or more in summer. The short flowering stem has no leaves and holds a single bright yellow flower. This plant begins blooming in early spring and grows in rich moist woods and can sometimes be found along stream banks.
