This plant is a perennial with alternate, entire leaves which are egg shaped and about 1 to 3 inches long. It also has a tuft of basal leaves. The flowering stem bears a raceme of small, white flowers with five petals and five sepals. The fruit is a globose capsule. The plant is found in wet places such as brackish shores and stands from five to twenty-four inches tall. It blooms from May to July. It is rather uncommon in Rhode Island but is not listed on the RI Rare Plant list.
