June’s mystery plant loves to have its feet wet and can be found growing along brooks, streams, and the edges of wetlands. The leaves are toothed, lance-shaped and 4 to 10 inches long, forming a basal rosette. It sends up a stout, hairy flower stalk in the spring which can be 1 to 3 feet tall. The five-petaled, 1/8” flowers are in branched clusters along the stalk. The blossoms range in colour from greenish yellow to dark red. This plant is on the Rhode Island Rare Plant list and, according to that list, found only in Providence county. However, one of the above photos was taken in Washington county.
