This fern grows in moist, shaded crevices on rock outcroppings which are often moss covered. The narrow fronds are cut into oval pinnae which are dark green and located mostly opposite each other along the rachis. The stipes and rachises are reddish-brown in color. The dark green pinnae and red-brown stipes presents an outstanding color combination when seen in the dark woods where this fern can sometimes be found. It can also be found in shaded spots on rocks or boulders in more open areas. The sori are found in pairs on the undersides of the pinnae.
