This is an early spring-blooming wildflower found on rocky slopes and ledges. It grows one to two feet tall and has showy nodding flowers with five red petals.  Each petal ends in a long spur. The leaves are alternate and compound with deeply lobed leaflets. 

2010 was one of the earliest blooms on record for this plant with some plants blooming by April 10.
